A couple small corrections:
Brainiac 5 (Legion), Grace Choi (Outsiders), and Knockout (Secret Six) are portrayed as having relationships with both men and women, so you might want to list them as bisexual instead.
Xavin (Runaways) should be listed as transgendered rather than gay, he’s a shapeshifter that identifies as male but but changes to a woman to satisfy his lesbian wife.
In addition you could add these characters from Ex Machina (Wildstorm):
Mitchell Hundred- The main character, formerly the superhero The Great Machina. He’s written deliberately ambiguous. He repeatedly refuses to deny or confirm that he’s gay and expresses love for his friend Rick Bradbury, as seen here
Lilith Warren- A lesbian FBI agent who first appears during the “Tag” arc.
Todd Wylie and Bill Dunst- A gay couple who are married at the end of the same.

Hello and welcome Jill! Greeat catches on the color coding Brainiac 5 and Xavin were mistakenly left wrong hue, but I didn’t have enough background on Knockout and Grace. Thanks! These are just the kinds of comments I need. I’ts great to know people are reading it that carefully. I’ve been staring at it so much it’s sometimes easy to miss things.
I’m working on adding the Deputy Mayor and his partner from Ex Machina. I had forgotten Lilith Warren. But I’m not so sure about Mitchell Hundred – I’ve read the whole series (big fan – love it), but for some reason never took him not answering the question as any kind of confirmation, but I either overlooked that one sentence at the end of that issue or just took it as a male bonding thing. Bradbury has a wife, right? Has there ever been any reason to think the feelings are reciprocated?
I’ll include Hundred with a question mark to establish him as hinted but unconfirmed.

You’re doing a great job on the list. If you need references, Grace dated Roy Harper earlier in the Outsiders series and Knockout dated Superboy during the 90s.
Dave Wylie is the Deputy Mayor, it’s his brother Todd, the firefighter, who is gay. With Hundred and Bradbury it’s a tough call. Bradbury is divorced with kids and while their friendship is often portrayed with romantic gestures (holding hands, sharing apartments and clothes, obsessing over each other’s approval) I wouldn’t include him. But since the question of Hundred’s sexuality is raised so early and repeated by the people closest to him, like Kremlin and his mother, I feel he belongs on the ambiguous list.
How detailed are you hoping to go on this? I know Piper, Montoya, and Maggie Sawyer have exes that appear multiple times but they’re quite minor so I don’t know if they should be included just for completeness’ sake.

I need to go back and reread those issues I’d been remembering that as the Deputy Mayor’s wedding – but I remember the fireman now.
Didn’t realize how foggy I was on this… Hundred never kissed Village Voice reporter Suzanne Padilla right? I remember a date (which I think prompted her to ask is he was gay?). Trying to remember if ther were comments or actions that would make me qualify him as unconfirmed bi instead of unconfirmed gay.
Does anyone have a scan of Todd Wyle and his groom – Bill Dunst? I’m looking for my back issues of Ex Machina but not having luck finding the earliest issues.
as to how complete I want the list… if they appeared at least 3 times OR had ANY sort of significant impact on a storyline they’d qualify. I included one of Maggie’s ex’s (Toby Raines), but she is the only one I found.

Their date ends badly, and Suzanne Padilla even when she’s Hundred’s confidant she mentions having a boyfriend. It could be argue that Hundred is asexual more than anything but again it’s a big question mark.

Looking through my scans, it seems like poor Piper’s ex James never got a last name and disappeared in nineties. I can’t blame him, dating crazy former supervillains is difficult. Both him and Piper’s other ex, a villain named Fury, appear in Flash Annual 10 from 1997. It might be worth looking at since it was unusual for a romance anthology to include a gay storyline.

Piper’s had three boyfriends:
1)Michael Forbes- A British chef Piper met in a soup kitchen. He was only around for an issue, but its still pretty significant. Piper is the first openly gay character in mainstream western comics, and Michael was his first love interest (appearing within a year of Piper coming out).
2) James (No Last Name)- He was Piper’s longest lasting boyfriend, sticking around nearly two years.
3) Earl Povich/Fury- A retcon who showed up in the “Pulp Heroes/Romance” annual (1998?). He broke out of prison and went on a crime spree, nearly killing James in the process.
I can probably scrounge up pictures of them if you still need them.
You’re also missing Houston and his civilian boyfriend Rive from the “Relative Heroes” mini series.
Tasmanian Devil had a boyfriend as well, Joshua Barbazon who was the liason/administrator for the Austrailian branch of the JLI.

I just finished adding Fury (found great images at DailyScans), I’ll probably add James as well with images from that story. But I could definitely use images of Michael Forbes, Joshua Barbazon, Houston, Rive (as well as more info on Relative Heroes – publisher?)

Relative Heroes was DC mini series put out in the early 2000s, written by Devon Grayson. I can email you a synopsis of the series (and scans) if you’d like. Houston and the team later turned up in Young Justice, where Joel was spotted checking out Superboy’s butt. (He had a bit of a crush on Superman in the RH mini).
Also, Mikaal Tomas/Starman III had a long time boyfriend named Tony (no last name?). His death is what led Mikaal into the current “Cry for Justice” mini series.
Terry Berg has a boyfriend named David (no last name) who was fairly prominent in the “Brother’s Keeper”/gay-bashing story arc.
Josiah Power has a long time boyfriend named Rupe (no last name) who turned up a few times in Power Company.

I’d love some scans of those characters. FYI what I’m looking for in scans is a single shot of the character (preferable by themselves) large enough that I can size to 450×680 (pixels).
I would LOVE scans of those characters! Hadn’t heard about Achilles… You just promted me to write an article – off to research! Time to comb through Gail’s posts and find as many beefcake shots of Achilles as I can. Again contributions are welcome if anyone has shots of him too!

There’s a list of Lilith Warren’s appearances here. She comes out in issue 9 when Hundred’s in the hospital. She first appears in issue 8 when her team breaks into Gracie Mansion to talk about the death of Hundred’s old NSA handler. In issue 46 she calls about “The Stars Are Down” static and mentions her wife.
Just a heads up, you have Hundred listed in bright blue, you probably meant for it to be black.

Xavin (Runaways) is transgender I agree, but he/she does not identify as male: the character is, on evidence, ambiguous and possibly conflicted about his/her own identity; judging from BKV’s run. Xavin is male or female according to the situation as she/he sees it (Skrulls have a curious sensitivity to gender roles for a race of shapeshifters) and reflecting Xavin’s state of mind: Xavin feels the male form is better suited for expressing dominance & power, for example. Joss Whedon wrote in that Xavin conforms to a female form when stressed as a reflection of his/her psychological identity. Accepting that implication, it would make Xavin a transgendered female.
Also, I’m not much of a comics buff, but I couldn’t find any connections between Foxglove and Hazel McNamara and the titles they are listed as from? I am familiar with them from the Sandman series and the Death graphic novels.

Sorry, but I strongly reject Whedon’s interpretation. Skrulls have never been portrayed as changing their gender out of sensitivity to humans or under stress, in fact they’ve usually seen the shape shifting as a disguise in that they’re born with a definite sex and appearance. Making Xavin change his entire identity and rewriting the way a whole species deals with gender to make a teenaged romance less complicated it insulting.

A relatively new gay character is closeted Det. Dedalus in Peter Milligan’s Greek Street (Vertigo). There are scenes of he & his partner in the last few issues. Unfortunately, this title seems to be hanging under the radar & there is little out there in the way of links.
Ancient Greek stories meets noir = Greek Street. It’s a great read.

Your missing spider-women from the Ultimate Universe.
She is a female clone of Peter Parker who remembers her life as a man and at least when first introduced still has feelings for MJ.
So i think that counts as transgendered.

Glad to see SIP on the list, If you’re including other graphic novels, maybe add D’Mer and Reiken (among others – lots of “Everyone Is Bi”-ness) of A Distant Soil. Bast is a shapechanger who presents through most of the series as female, but changes genders based on situation and love, so the character reads as transgender or genderqueer.
Also, Elfquest, although they have a sad tendency to kill off the explicitly gay male pairings (2 for 2, by my count). In the original 8-10 book canon (depending on who’s counting), you have a canon “Everyone Is Bi” vibe: Cutter and Skywise; Pike, Krim, and Scot (a permanent bi M/M/F threesome pairing… come to think of it, Scot, the second male in the threesome died too – DAMMIT, WARP!); Cutter, Nightshade, and Redlance (another M/M/F threesome); Leetah and Nightshade (F/F); and so on…
