The Complete Strangers in Paradise: Volume 3 part 7 Stuck Rubber Baby

A truly eye-opening comic. The story is set in the South in the early ’60s and deals with homophobia, racism and the gay subculture of that period. Toland Polk, a young white working class man gradually comes to grips with his homosexuality while struggling with his own learned racism and that of his community.

Strugglers Strugglers: A Graphic Novel

Tighe, the confused boy, struggles to find himself. Tracey, the girl with too much ambition, struggles to make it big. Alison, the girl with no ambition, struggles to ignore her meddling friends. And Mike struggles to find someone to love. Sharing a hip Saint Louis apartment, these friends face only the problems we all deal with… finding jobs, boyfriends, bars, and bands. Their struggles end only as they begin to grow up.

And of course any list of important publications featuring LGBT themes REALLY cannot completely exclude some of the sexier stuff. So I won’t. With homosexuality treated as a taboo subject for so long by the “Comics Code” the underground sexualized art of illustrators like Tom of Finland and Harry Bush was the only LGBT representation in the comics medium. The trail blazing work of these pioneer artists should be celebrated. And it is. Not only are they remembered with many archival collections of their work, but they’ve gone on to inspire a whole new generation of artists devoted to the beauty of the male form.

  1. So glad “Stuck Rubber Baby” is on here. It is one of the best comics ever! :)

  2. I suggest “Fun Home” by Alison Bechdel. It was nominated for several awards, won an Eisner and spent two weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list.

  3. Max and Sven by Tom Bouden, Ralf Konig’s books, Tough Love – High School Confidential by Abby Denson, Dar: A Super Girly Top Secret Comic Diary by Erika Moen, Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel, Love and Rockets, Young Bottoms in Love by various (ed. by Tim Fish)

  4. Don’t forget Tom Bouden’s first hit, “Max and Sven.” A completely refreshing, funny, and touchingly honest portrayal of a friendship between two best friends, one gay and one straight. Great list, but don’t forget that one! :)
